In Belarus the crafts of making textiles, bedcovers and carpets developed quite late, towards the end of the 19th century, and reached their peak in the middle of the 20th century. Textile items are mainly performed using harness or figured weaving techniques. The patterns often feature geometric ornaments characteristic of Belarusian culture, but floral motifs and images of animals and birds are also common. Our shawl has storks woven into the pattern. Stork has been considered a harbinger of happiness, spring and rebirth since ancient times in Belarus.
